Accident Classified As:
The Tail Gas II unit stripper tower began to pressure up due to flow restrictions in the overhead gas. The flow restriction diminished the ability of the stripper tower to remove RSC compounds from the amine solution and thus diminished the capacity of the amine solution to adsorb RSC compounds in the absorber tower. This resulted in elevated RSC levels in the atmospheric vent gas.
The rapid increase in RSC levels could not have been predicted.
A hot condensate wash was conducted to dissolve salts in the stripper overhead system.
