Cause of Problem: Corrosion

A high LEL was found at the #1 cooling tower, operations started checking for leaks and found that the debutanizer overhead trim cooler, 12-1309, was leaking hydrocarbons into the cooling water. Leak caused by under deposit corrosion.

Discharge Preventable - No

Failure was unforeseeable.

Notes/Remedial Actions

The debutanizer trim cooler was isolated and leaking tubing plugged.
