A community member complaint by Velma White on 2/3/14 prompted investigation of Calumet. At 9:00 on 2/3/14 Calumet employees discovered that the carbon canister was over saturated, which allowed H2S to vent to the atmosphere causing the reported odor. Calumet Environmental Engineer explained that the canister is checked daily and when the canister is saturated, the canister is then replaced with a new canister. At 12:15 on 2/3/14 a new carbon canister was replaced.
Upon discovery of the odor complaint, Calumet used water as a means to keep the vapor down and localized. At the time of inspection it was noted that after the replacement of the carbon canister, the facility decided to install three carbon canister in series. Therefor if the first canister failed, there were two additional canisters the H2S would go through prior to venting into the atmosphere.
