On June 18, 2013 at approximately 3:30 PM there was a release from Calumet's waste water treatment unit. The release of crude oil in the refinery was from sewer overflows following a heavy rain event.
Heavy rainfall caused flooding.
immediate corrective action was to begin containment of spilled material. Remedial action was utilizing a vacuum truck to remove spilled oil. Although the facility did not offer any information in their 7 day letter regarding the Reportable Quantities that were exceeded by this event, the RQ for crude oil (which is 42 gallons or 1 barrel) was exceeded since there was 5 barrels of crude released during this event.
