Accident Classified As: Reportable Quantity
The underground portion of a line that was suspected to be leaking was excavated to find the source of the leak. The leak was caused by external corrosion of the underground line. When the leak was found, the line was isolated and a clamp was installed to stop the leak. Approximately 1.45 barrels of mixed gas oil (MGO) leaked to the soil from the underground line. Of the 1.45 barrels that leaked, 23.4 gallons migrated over the soil and into a nearby sewer drain. A vacuum truck picked up the pooled oil from the soil and sewer drain.
The leaking portion of this line was underground and had no previous history of leaks. The above ground portion of the line was externally inspected in February 2002 and found to be in acceptable condition. This line is scheduled to be inspected by year end 2011.
